Galați County, a Danube port in eastern Muntenia, has in Galați municipality — with around 250,000 inhabitants — an important steel industry center, home to the ArcelorMittal plant. Alongside the steel industry, the county's economy includes port and logistics activities on the Danube, agriculture in the fertile plain, and a services sector supported by the presence of the "Dunărea de Jos" University.
